I found the REA book to be sufficient for passing U.S. History 1 and 2. However, technique matters.

When you take a practice test, do NOT answer any question unless you KNOW the correct answer. You do not want to get credit for a lucky guess when you are preparing for a test. Once the practice test is over, thoroughly review the explanations for every question you missed (or did not answer). It's a really good idea to do a Wikipedia search on the items you missed. Skimming the Wikipedia page should provide you a good understanding of what you missed. If you understand, it will be easier to remember the correct answer when you take the real CLEP test.

Keep repeating this process until done with all three practice tests. If your REA practice test performance is weak, do the free Peterson's tests. With the Peterson's tests, you need to answer each question. If you don't answer a question, you may not get to see the explanation of the correct answer.

Here are my Peterson's scores for U.S. History 1: 57%, 62%, 53%
63 CLEP Sociology
75 CLEP U.S. History II
63 CLEP College Algebra
70 CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
68 DSST Technical Writing
72 CLEP U.S. History I
77 CLEP College Mathematics
470 DSST Statistics
53 CLEP College Composition
73 CLEP Biology
54 CLEP Chemistry
77 CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications

Thank you, but as a coworker pointed out years ago, maybe not. I overstudied. If I had studied less and passed with a lower score, I would have had time to study for another test. It's difficult to figure out the appropriate amount of effort.
