I agree with Ironheadjack. Its unlikely that there is a glitch in the ALEKS system. There is no partial score (which means if you get even 1 answer wrong in a topic with 3 questions all will be deemed wrong)and you have to be careful with rounding down/up a number.
I did College Algebra last month. I started with Beginning Algebra which took me about 10 hours to complete and then Intermediate Algebra which took me another 10 hour 30 minutes or so. I moved on to college algebra after that and scored 73 on the first assessment so it is possible to get it on the first shot.
I would advice starting at Beginning algebra and working your way upto College Algebra. An assessment at the Beginning algebra level should give you an idea of where you truly stand on your algebraic knowledge. Scoring a 24% in college algebra level would probably put you in the range of maybe 40-50% of intermediate Algebra.
