[quote=zapproximator]That's really interesting. I read that the Extension school would cost around $40,000 so that's a lot more than getting a degree from TESU for $10,000. What are the requirements to get PTK scholarships?[/QUOTPTK is by invitation to CC students with GPA of 3.25+, it costa about $75 to join....this is the biggest reason I recommend a CC for you rahter than one of the big three. Through PTK my daughter had a full ride at a state school offered, a near full ride at an in state private school offered, and the took the three PTk courses at HES.
Once in HES she was offered PELL and other aid....it took her a few years to get through, but all in we probab;y have less than 10K in her Bachelors...and it could have been about half that as I'm counting the cost for the family to go see her graduate and the cost of a vacation that included her being in Washington DC for a week. The $40K you reference is rack rate for 4 years at HES....with htis plan two years would be transferred in and we would hope for soem aid for the rest. Not a sure thing, but probably the surest thing in the Ivy League.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this). Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

zapproximator Wrote:Does anyone have any advice for a 13-year-old (almost 14) working toward a (probably) finance degree by 18? I'm 6 credits in with CLEP Marketing/Management and about to take CLEP A&I Lit. I have a degree plan I made with Google Sheets here for TESU: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...edit#gid=0. I'm guessing I'll have to change it since maybe TESU will change exams like American Literature/English Literature/Analyzing Literature to 3 credit exams since I think that's the ACE-recommended credit recommendation.
Do you think TESU is best? Any tips for studying, etc?
Thank you for your help!
I think it's commendable that you're so motivated at 13. So, here's a question that probably won't make you feel warm and fuzzy, and might draw some criticism, but what's the point of completing your degree by 18? I know it feels like a very prestigious thing, but eventually, you'll be *not 18* and the novelty will wear off, and you'll be faced with a regular grown up career trajectory like everyone else. If you're that bright ( I mean that sincerely) why not aim higher?

Sure. What do you mean by aim higher?
I'd love to hear what you think!

Graduate by 17?
No, but seriously, that's what I did a couple of years ago. I'm now blessed with a great career.
Why not finish college while others are finishing high school? That is aiming pretty high in my opinion.
I have never really understood the older members here, why they are always saying this. They have gotten their degrees this way, but for some reason you should not. (Sorry, everyone, I am not meaning to be argumentative. I just have a different opinion than the older folks, obviously.) Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.
God bless.

Are you referring to the 2 DSST and 1 Straighterline I took for my Bachelors?

Regarding age, it can put people into different circumstances. For the older degreeless person that life seems to be passing by, getting a degree to check off a checkbox on a job application is a worthy and expedient goal where learning something might even be irrelevant.
For a youthful teenager, there is time to actually learn something and pursue a career impossible for the older working person to consider. For the young person, actually learning chemistry or biology might be a better idea that passing the CLEPs for those subjects.

I personally do not know how they compare (and probably most people don't since you only take one or the other) but they are both created by the same company: CollegeBoard.
Considering the fact that there are many of the same courses (Bio, Chem, Spanish, French, German, US Government, US History, Calculus, Microecon, etc.), I would assume that the exams are, if not exactly the same, at least similar. You can find the exam info for each and compare what each covers.

As an "older member", I think I'm qualified to answer, at least for myself. With many years of life experience behind me, I can honestly say what I say to my kids all the time: "what's the rush?" I don't want my kids to grow up too fast, and while I want them to have goals, I also want them to be kids. I want them to enjoy the ride.
I also want them to take some of the years between 18-22 (ish) to really explore different things. I feel like if I point them (or they point themselves) towards something very early on, and then they're focused on that goal, it MAY be to the exclusion of other things. I want them to have open minds, and try things they wouldn't necessarily think they might like or be good at. If you're just plowing through courses, testing out of things, then you may be missing out a little.
Not that having a goal is a bad thing - but tunnel vision is, in my opinion, especially at a younger age.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. I'm not always right. But I do bring a certain amount of experience to the table, as many here do, and we all have our reasons for thinking the way we do. If you find that a lot of "older people" here are saying the same things, then maybe we're all coming to similar conclusions, and that may be something to think about right there.

CollegeBoard itself says "Nearly all colleges and universities in the US grant credit and placement for qualifying AP scores." They do not say this about their own CLEP exams. I think about twice as many schools will either give credit for AP courses, or give a waiver (no credit, but you can take higher level courses instead). A lot of the ivies will only take AP (and sometimes then, only a 5).
Here in CA, the CSU system accepts CLEP and DSST (and of course AP), while UC's don't accept CLEP/DSST at all. If you list the UC system schools, they are much more well-known and prestigious than the CSU's (UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, etc.).
It's kind of silly if you think about it, since the exams are probably similar. But, that's the way it is.
