Advice - BS Data science
#1
Hello,

I am seeking advice for a career shift. I work in the hospitality industry as F&B manager, I hold an associate diploma in culinary arts from Les Roches, and graduated more than 10 years ago. I was advised to do an MBTI test recently and got INTP as a result. after reading about my personality (INTP) I found out why I hate my job and I need to change my career to something would like and match my skills. Since I am good at math and enjoy problem-solving and analyzing I was considering BS in Data science.

Any university recommendation where I get a BS in Data science as an international student for a short time and a low price? I have zero experience in Data science.
I am considering doing a Bachelor in Liberal Studies -(MIS) from UMPI and then a Master's degree in Data Science at a good university. Still, I am worried it will be hard to find a university to enroll me for a Master’s Degree in science with a BLS? or is there another way my associate degree is not useless? maybe BS in MIS then master in DS?

Thank you so much Smile

Edit: Adding more info below

Your Location: International Student
Your Age: 35
What kind of degree do you want? My first choice is a BS in Data science. or I get a very fast Bachelor's if I can transfer most of my college degree and then afterward do a master’s in data science.

My budget   aroubd 10K USD ,  i dont have time limit but i perfer to finish asap since i am over 35 year old and would like to do career shift asap with a decent Uni were i dont have hard time to get accepet into a Job or master degree in the futur
Universities to consider : during my search i  found few universities good for DS as international student like umass Globle, Liberty University, champlain College and Prudue Global. but i am open for suggestion
Currently unemployed, i have alot of time to study, i can study around 30 hours per week minimum.

@FullFocus, Welcome to the board, I'm moving this from General Education-Related to Degree Planning Advice. It's a pretty good introduction post, but you're missing the info in the addendum and template. It's best to provide an overall overview of your situation with extra details such as your budget, commitments, study habits, etc that is asked of within the addendum and template here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Area-works

With the limited info you have provided, it really depends on those various variables, my suggestion is to do the UMPI BABA PM & IS or at the very least, the BLS MIS minor you mentioned, and take the 3-4 classes that will go towards the MAOL just in case you change paths. You can do the Masters in Analytics or Data Science afterwards, there are a few that do not require undergrad in that field. Take your time to review the Grad section threads and WIKI...

I am sorry did not know about the Template . Thank you for the help, I updated my post. I would like to have umpi as the last option if possible.

I have a question please: after transferring credits from an associate degree, MOOC or third party like study.com, my new transcript will be graded with GPA? or Pass & fail? Or depending on the University?

Your new transcript will only show graded classes for the ones you take at the University, all other transfer credit will show as it did originally from whichever institution or provider you completed them from. Out of the 4 you mentioned, Purdue Global and UMass Global seem to be good options as they have Exceltrack and MyPath for them. I would skip Champlain and Liberty...

You're probably going to want to either go with a business/IS or computer science bachelor's degree, then the data science master's. It depends on whether you want to sit more on the analysis side or the technical side of the field.
NanoDegree: Intro to Self-Driving Cars (2019)
Coursera: Stanford Machine Learning (2019)
TESU: BA in Comp Sci (2016)
TECEP:Env Ethics (2015); TESU PLA:Software Eng, Computer Arch, C++, Advanced C++, Data Struct (2015); TESU Courses:Capstone, Database Mngmnt Sys, Op Sys, Artificial Intel, Discrete Math, Intro to Portfolio Dev, Intro PLA (2014-16); DSST:Anthro, Pers Fin, Astronomy (2014); CLEP:Intro to Soc (2014); Saylor.org:Intro to Computers (2014); CC: 69 units (1980-88)

thank you for your reply. If I understand correctly, my total GPA will be the Accumulative Average of both transfer grades and the grades I will take from university.  and it the same for PUG, UMass Global, and TESU?

I managed to find study plans for data science at PUG and TESU but nothing for Umass Global, it surprised me that no info about UMass Global. Why is it not popular?

thank you for your reply. I would like to work on the analysis side, if I just go for a BS in Data science will it I have a hard time finding a job?

SNHU allows 90 alternative credits for transfer, make sure to maximize all of those credits from Sophia.org & Study.com combo (along with whatever else such as Coursera, etc). Great job in getting the 60% scholarship, how did you do that? I guess you just applied and was accepted for that particular one...

About the scholarship: What happened to me was not expected at all, I was just causally asking them how much credit costs for international students, and then they transferred me to their offer in India to handle my questions since it handles students in Asia. I didn’t ask or think that I would ever get a scholarship since I am not from the USA nor India, The adviser in India set up a Zoom call with me to explain the program and the cost, so I was like I will think about it and then I was about to hang up the line then he told if you enroll before end 2023 I will give 60% discount, so I enrolled xD I believe they had a target to meet before the end of the year which is why he kept pushing me on WhatsApp for 2 days to enroll before the end of the year, and when I told him I will think about it and then enroll later, he told me maybe next year you won't get any discount.

If you don’t have a US residency then they will transfer you to the branch office in India or South America. From what I understood the one who will teach me will be an Indian professor based in India, but I will confirm when I start.

can i use my coursera (google project management) as Major Electives?
