About Excelsior
#1
Hi all,

How are you doing? I want to ask all those who have gone to Excelsior and have major in History what Exam have you taken to Complete the Degree. Also do the EC Exam go towards your GPA? And does anyone have a degree plan for the history major thanks, i was looking to go to TESC but now i think maybe Excelsior would be better.

Hi,

Here is one example of the exams/classes you could take to fulfill a History major at EC:

CLEP US History I (3)
CLEP US History II (3)
CLEP Western Civilization I (3)
CLEP Western Civilization II (3)
DSST Intro to the Middle East (3)
HSS *440 Historiography Class (3 UL)
DSST Civil War & Reconstruction (3 UL)
DSST Rise & Fall of the Soviet Union (3 UL)
ECE American Dream (6 UL)

HIS*440- this course meets both requirements for Historiography/Hist Methodology, Research and Writing.

The Area II focus requires having at least 4 courses/exams in either American, or European or Non-Western history- I chose American history for this lineup. Here you have 15 credits at the LL, 15 at UL to satisfy the major requirement. Again, this is just one way to do it.

Here's a link to view the guidelines for the major from EC-

At EC you will receive grades for most DSSTs (not the updated versions) and all ECEs.

Hope this helps.

Hi Smile

I can't think of another UL American history exam, but you may be able to substitute it with other courses. I think EC offers several, and a quick class search on their website will confirm this.

Also, check out the Exam Content Guides from EC. They'll give you an idea of what to expect, as well as the suggested reading material.

American Dream sounds like a difficult exam, and there's not much feedback about it online. 3 hours, 3 essays. It can take up to 75 days for EC to score. But, for 6 UL credits, it could be worth it. One resource to consider if you choose to take it is "MY Access". This tutoring service is available for $30 and gives you unlimited use for 9 months. If you register to take the ECE English comp, it's free. You can submit practice essays that are scored by the same system that scores the actual exam. Just a thought.

Keep in mind that there's more than one way to fulfill the major requirements and you'll want to confirm you choices with an adviser to be sure.
