A sad yet true tale
#1
One course , that's all after passing 27 cleps and dantes tests...and then graduation. But alas, that one course after being out of the classroom for 30 years proved to be a huge stumbling block!! College math is a curse not a course. If you are a math whiz at simple math great...but, as I suspected the only thing simple about this test ..was me!!! For those of you coming out of high school or recent algebra classes who know an equation from an equator, you'll do fine. But, my equation was an equator and I ended up in the south pole!! There are alot of challenges in life ...Iam ,was , and forever will be challenged by upper level math. Yet, I promise, come hell or high water, That I will find a way to get my liberal arts degree from T.E.S.C. six credits that can be either 3 math and 3 science aren't going to stop me.

Regards ... from a determined graduate to be..somehow..someway!!

Have you considered going to an educational testing firm, and being tested to see if you have dyscalculia, which is the learning disability for math? If you do, they will provide you with a written report, which can be submitted to your school. Your school will then have the means with which to allow you to take a lower-level math course, or to obtain a waiver for the math requirement. If you decide to go this route, be very sure that you are tested by a creditable testing agency, or the report will not meet the appropriate standards for acceptance by your school.

Rob,

That hurts. No two bones about it. From what I remember you were pretty close on the CLEP test. Perhaps taking this course put you over the edge. With a scaled test one tough question could put you into the coveted P category. Remember a single grain of rice can tip the scale.

You folks on this board are what keep me going. Keep up the work and You'll get there!

Hey Ron -

You already know my hard luck story concerning math but I solved that problem with Technical Math 1 from Penn Foster College; can it work for you too? I hope so!!

Ron,
First of all I know that you will do it! I also know how you feel.
I needed only Math and English to finish mine and I made 48 on that exam. I have completed about 135-140 hrs credit by testing and that is the only exam that I failed.
I ended up taking Dantes Statistics for my Math and passed it. I was almost through when I found IC and have only been on this board for a short period of time. However, I know that you have a lot of people pulling for you. Keep us posted.

Ron,
I'm like you Ive been out of school for 30 years. I opted not to CLEP the college math and take a "regular course" since I figured It had been too long since I've taken any math. Im currently enrolled in Excelsior College Math, and the word college shouldnt even be in it. It starts out with addition and subtraction covers percentages, measurement, basic geometry, signed numbers and finally intro to algebra. there is no homework required. there are a total of 12, ten question quizes and a 50 question midterm and final, all online, none are proctored. It was so easy I finished 1/2 the course in a week, although you can only turn in two quizes a week. It was almost pathetic that they call it college math, but alas its 3 credits in college math. This may be an option for you.

Hi Ron,

I don't think I can add much to the suggestions already listed in this thread. Except more support. I KNOW that you are a bright, competent guy. You wouldn't have been able to accomplish all that you already have if you weren't. Along with lots of others, I'm pulling for you. Big Grin

Hey Ron -

It's me again.

I forgot about the EC math option like the one Chosin01 mentioned. It may cost a few more $....BUT it will be well worth it in the end! Good Luck!!
