While going through my stuff I found a packet of books that was never opened. I signed up for English 1A back in 2002 at a local college but ended up dropping out and never bothered to get a refund on the books. I just peeled off the plastic just now. One is a spiralized book of The College Writer's Reference Third Edition, the other is the Editing Activities for The College Writer's Reference, and an access code for the required course materials. I don't even know how many editions have come out since then. Do they change much?---is this edition obsolete or can I use it as a guide? I'm hoping to take the TECEP for English Comp II and it would be great if I can use this as a source.

If you're not hoping to use them for a class, they should be perfectly valid for studying for the TECEP. If they teach you how to do citations, that section might be out of date. Otherwise, you're fine.

if its only for a TECEP then probably ok
but if you were taking an actual course where you had to write essays that require APA formatting then some things might have changed and be out of date

Editions change every few years, I would supplement what you currently have with what is available or asked for through the course TECEP guidelines. I would assume what you currently have will help, but your main focus for English Comp courses are a set of skills such as composition, content, exercises with lengthy writing, etc - skim the TECEP requirements and see if the book you have will cover the information it lists within the guide...
