OK CLEP/DSST experts,
I was asked this question from a soon to be deployed NCO. "What five CLEP/DSST books would you recommend for a soldier to take to Iraq?"
The subjects don't matter - but he wants to set up a small library for his soldiers. He knows that the company commander is a certified Test Control Officer and no matter where they end up - CLEP/DSST is an option (paper based).
Here would be my five:
1. College Board Official CLEP Guide
2. Official DSST Test Prep Guide
3. Barron's CLEP
4. REA Analyze and Interpret Literature
5. Cliff Notes - Economics
Here's my rationale:
The 1st two are obvious since those are offical guides with info for 8 DSST exams and all the CLEP exams.
The Barron's CLEP has sample tests for English Comp, Humanities, College Mathematics, Natural Science, and Social Science - History. I especially liked the sample questions for the Comp with Essay.
REA Analyze and Interpret Lit - just because that exam is a relatively easy six credits IMHO,
Cliff Notes - Economics. My 18 yr old son used these as his only test prep source for Micro and Macro (although he reads the WSJ daily).
Again, I'm looking at some other ideas for this NCO. Thanks!

I have a few questions....can they only carry 5 books or will they have a home base (place) where others can be held and then they can lend as needed to the soldiers.
I would be willing to donate a few books, if I knew where to send them so that they would be utilized by the soldiers. They do so much for us that I can't help but wonder if others would not also provide their slightly used books and references.
Can you get more information for us?

I would venture that your son's prior knowledge and interest were key to his passing both Econ CLEPs with Cliffs only. I know Econ looks like 2 tests/1 book and that's real attractive, but if the 5 book limit is ironclad, consider the Psychology CLEP REA instead. If they have the Web then it's a different matter: Cliffs + Amosweb +
Econ 5000 are probably enough.

The unit deploys in March 2010 - and they should be in theater in April. Having been deployed, the unit won't really know until they are in theater where they are going.
Once I get an APO in the Spring, I'll be happy to provide the info. I'll know a lot more about space limitations and such. It can vary greatly depending on where they end up.

When the unit deploys in the Spring - I'll post an APO address to ship directly to the soldier who wants to assemble the library.

If any of them plan on taking any business exams, I would recommend getting the Barron's Business Review series book for each test. (Finance, Business Law, Marketing, Management, etc.) Everything you would ever need to know to pass.
Cracking the CLEP is a useful supplement for the general exams. They have practice exams for each one, with explanations for every answer.

Everytime I deployed, we had access to computers and the internet so I would recommend IC above all. Additionally, you should have education personnel deploying with you as well so testing there is a possability...at least it was for me with the "chair force".

It was tough maintaining study dicipline after working 15 hour days though.

In the Army - it can vary greatly You can be at Camp Liberty at Baghdad Intl Airport (almost like the States), or an armpit of an Forward Operating Base with very limited or no Internet, or anywhere in between.
And as far as Education Personnel Deploying, it depends on where you go.

Will they have access to a computer, even if they don't have access to the internet? There are several good pdf resources available. I can make a list of those.
