Would you put program accreditation on your resume? - soliloquy - 08-05-2014

I was just googling information "examples of great resumes AACSB" when I came across a suggestion for putting program accreditation (if it's accredited by a reputable source) on your resume. The link is here. By the way...the resume samples seemed terrible to me but what do I know.

I would never do it for business accreditation because:

a) Hardly anybody in the "real" world knows, outside of HR departments dealing with tuition reimbursement.
b) It takes up unnecessary space which could be used to describe leadership activities, school consulting projects, awards, etc...
c) AACSB does not equate to quality. Many top non-US schools are not AACSB and a few US business schools like Carey (Hopkins) are not accredited at all, but undeniably better than most AACSB schools.

I can't see it hurting a resume, but based on the little time recruiters/hiring managers spend looking at a resume, I see little pragmatic reason for including something which can distract their eyes from more important things.

For ABET and other types of program accreditation which are more recognized outside academia, I think that it may be worth putting in your resume.

I think AACSB schools consider it a prestigious accreditation, however, you risk looking a little showy in my opinion. Those who attended AACSB schools (and know/care) will know that your school is accredited, those that didn't won't be made to feel like pions. Smile

If it is important to the hiring authority, they will know it. If it isn't they won't, and it won't mean anything to them. To me, like putting a GPA, it's a space-waster.

I am not sure about business, but I would be tempted to add ABET if it were an Engineering or Engineering Technology degree. This is a unique case though because of the influence of ABET.
