  GRRRRR.... Capstone vent
Posted by: burbuja0512 - 03-17-2011, 08:08 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (8)

I have been very happy with COSC's customer service and I love my advisor. I also know that technical difficulties happen and I should be patient but GRRRRR I am so frustrated with my Capstone class right now!!

I guess there is a substitute professor teaching my class right now, so I understand that she needs some time to get up to speed, but OMG. She hasn't even posted more than a couple of times this week.

To make things worse, our assignment #4 is to summarize our strategies for our team assignment #5. Oh yeah... they didn't post assignment #5. I literally spent hours searching and thinking I was a moron. Finally some brave soul posted and complained about how unorganized things were. A day or so later we finally see a post from the professor apologizing for the technical difficulties.

I'm really impatient. The syllabus to the class looks great; rigorous but interesting. It's just so distracting to have all these issues.

Is this normal for online classes? I've only taken one in my life and it was a pretty simple class without the complex assignments we have in my Capstone.

My lowest clep score was a 68
Posted by: ryoder - 03-17-2011, 06:00 AM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (10)

Yeah I'm bragging but I wanted to post this since there is a lot of focus on passing these tests instead of mastering the content. I studied my but off for each test save marketing and the computer exams since i work in that world but i really feel like I have learned a lot from my clep studies and that I am prepared for graduate level course work in business.

Id like to see more posts bragging about high scores but reflecting on the hard work necessary to get that score.

At the end of the day a pass is a pass though so if you get a low score move on and study harder next time.

  BA Computer Science TESC
Posted by: skyfall123 - 03-17-2011, 05:27 AM - Forum: [ARCHIVE] Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak Specific Discussion - Replies (23)

I wanted to post some feedback about the TESC BA Computer Science program since Sandra requested it, and hopefully it may prove valuable to others. First off the curriculum is much different than a BSBA Computer Information Systems degree. It is more theory based and requires Calc I & Calc II.

But first let me tell you why we choose this route for son #2 (Dan). The federal government has a grant program called Scholarship for Service which will essentially pay for a Masters Degree in Information Security in exchange for two years of federal employment. In addition the student receives a $12K a year stipend to live on while attending school. This is important because it shows one way the CS degree can pay off. Dan has applied for the FSU CS program and has been told he has a very good chance of receiving it. We will know in about 4 weeks. https://www.sfs.opm.gov/ Sandra I believe UNC also offers this program. Now this scholarship is for US citizens only who are able to obtain a security clearance. This is important since most CS Masters programs are filled with international students. They don't qualify for the scholarship.

Now the bueaty of the TESC CS program is that it is pretty flexible. You must take Calc I & Calc II, Discrete Math, Data Structures and a Intoduction to Computing course ( which can be met with the CLEP), but the rest is up to you. I strongly suggest also taking Operating Systems and Computer Architecture since these are pre-reqs for any and all Masters CS programs.

I see that Straighterline now has Calc I & Calc II. Dan filled those through the USDA Graduate School. $295 per course, but self paced and doable if you take your time.

Data Structures requires a background in C++ so you need that foundation going in. Discrete Math was the hardest for Dan, not because it was impossibly difficult, but like any other math course you need to practice and take your time working through the problems to get better. Its not like studying for a CLEP where you can collect massive amounts of info in a short period of time. These course require a slow and steady pace.

Operating Systems and Computer Architecture were the easiest for Dan and I imagine any other students. Dan was accepted into the UIS CS Masters program with his TESC BA CS, but has his heart set on FSU with the SFS. I'll keep you posted on how things go.

  Intro to Bussiness DSST Question.
Posted by: jm82792 - 03-16-2011, 11:03 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (8)

I am planning on taking Western Civ II and Intro To Business.
(it's sorta a big deal since I have to spend $350 to get to the facility with the Plane + Taxi.)

What is the DSST scoring system is and if I can pass it with the knowledge I have acquired from some CLEPS I've passed.

My friend is in the same boat I am in CLEP wise and passed with a 425.
They couldn't find any resources regarding where that score is other then it's a pass.
Is there any information you have regarding the scoring system ?

The tests I've taken that are related to theIntro to Bussiness DSST test. Intro to Business.
Macroeconomics(55), Microeconomics(58), Business Management(65), Marketing(68) and flunked Financial Accounting with a 45(wow terrible, I will own it in 6 months I hope)

What do you think?
My friend who took it told me I could almost take it cold since I've taken the same tests he has done.
(for what I know he scored the CLEP equivalent of 50)

I'd really value your guy's opinions regarding this Smile
Thanks for your time,
Josh

Are there different psychology CLEPs or just one?
Posted by: umbellate - 03-16-2011, 08:13 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

I'm confused. Is there only ONE psychology CLEP, it being introductory psychology? Or are there specialized CLEPs that cover different concentrations within psychology, like abnormal psych or developmental psych? I'm apparently horrible at doing Internet research. Thanks for your help!

Newbie Here! Need help with testing out
Posted by: JnWalla18 - 03-16-2011, 08:13 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (4)

Hi everybody! I am newly enrolled in Excelsior Program for BS in HealthScience Degree. I did not have many credits to transfer and it's been 20 yrs since I took college courses. My goal after all these yrs, 3 kids and a lifetime later, is to finally get back to my dream of completing my degree. I chose BS in HealthCare because I've been working in this field for a while without a degree. Which of course means I don't have the same promotion opportunities as others with the Degree. All this to say. I'm spinning my wheels a bit on which Cleps, Dantes, ECE's to take and what resources of study material to use to prepare. I bought a couple of texts but geez I don't have time to read a 500 page text to bone up on US History facts! What am I doing wrong? I do have 1 of the Review books Cracking the Cleps and I'm using the instacert flashcards - still seems excessive study to test out vs just taking the actual coursework (which I can't afford). HELP!!

I'm officially finished and took my last test today! Kind of a bittersweet moment telling the ladies at the testing center I won't be back Sad
But I'm soooo glad to be done, I don't know why I waited until the last minute to finish most of my tests.
These are all the ones I've taken this year, and the rest I did June 2010 or earlier

I'm new and need lots of help.
Posted by: kindrob - 03-16-2011, 06:07 PM - Forum: General Education-Related Discussion - Replies (14)

Hello,
I need to cover a total of 27 credits in general subject to get my professional license in PT. I have an option to take 12 credits out of the required ones thru CLEP, but the rest of them have to be done at the college. And everything will have to be done inside August first week. I'm planning to get enrolled for the May and Summer sessions at the local college for 16 credits and rst 12 have to be thru CLEP.
I would need help in choosing those subjects that would be easy to be covered thru CLEP, as well as easy ones at the college. Biology and Math are my favs but then its about 13 yrs since i last attended any college. I was trying to figure out Biology thru IC materials, it seems there is hell lot to be covered. But i think i can do it, what would your take on it, will it be better be done at the college? How about Math thru CLEP or College?
I'm only using IC flash cards as of now for CLEP prep, will that be good enough to get those 50%? which all courses will be good for CLEP if prepared using IC cards?
Help with your suggestions please.
One with a very limited time in Brownsville.
