Question for a more experienced CLEP-taker
#1
While at my last CLEP examination the manager of the center told me that when CLEP results are sent to individual colleges the colleges do not look at the scores - they only look to see if it is passing. She said that CLEP scores are not figured into the GPA's. According to her the only reason for scores is that certain departments at colleges require scores higher than 50 (for example, if you are majoring in math they might require a score of 60 and above to satisfy the requirement for Calculus.)

I don't quite understand this since the books published by REA attach grades to scores. If this is the case then it doesn't matter if I get a 50 or an 80 (except on a personal level.)

Can anyone give me more information about this?

Thanks!
CLEP tests taken:

76 - College Algebra
57 - American Government
74 - Precalculus
75 - Analyzing & Interpreting Literature
65 - Chemistry
72 - History of the U.S. 1
70 - History of the U.S. 2
74 - Introductory Psychology
73 - Biology
64 - English Composition
77 - Macroeconomics
74 - Microeconomics

The scores in the REA book are just to give you some idea of how you're doing as you prepare.

It doesn't matter if you get a 50 or an 80 unless your particular college attaches a grade to the score. Some colleges do and some don't. You need to check with your college to find out their policy. If they don't attach a grade to the score, then a 50 is just as good as an 80.

Hi,

The information provided was correct. A CLEP exam grade, once recieved by your institution is recorded as either a pass/fail. The reason being that there is insufficient information regarding the particulars of the test to be able to attach a letter grade to it. Having said that, a 50 is a pass according to the ACE recommendation. Your educational institution may have a higher cut off standard. It is highly recommended you speak to the academic advisor at your educational institution and find out what their requirements are. Generally, the recommended score is 50.
Hope this helps :-)
