Minimum TESC Online class midterm grade?
#1
I know this is kind of an odd question, but is there a minimum passing score needed on TESC’s online classes’ midterms? I know that the cumulative grade for the class has to be at least 60% but does the midterm, too?

So for example, if I get a 60% on the midterm I can pass the class, but if I get a 59% I don't.

I’m just curious if you can flunk a midterm and still pass the class. I checked the catalog, the student handbook, and the website and it doesn’t mention it. I can’t figure out if this is one of those random tidbits of info I have in my brain, or if I’m just wrong.
I'm done!
B.A. English, TESC, completed December 2008

Tests passed: A/I Lit-73, Mgmt-71, Amer Lit-73, Tech Writing-64, Criminal Justice-56, Here's to Your Health-65, Law Enforcement-60

In my mind that really doesn't make sense that there would be a "minimum" grade for mid-terms and finals. There is a calculated final grade based on the weighted averages of the assignments including mid-terms and finals. So, if by some miracle you can fail something that is 30% of your grade and still pass solidly on your assignments then you are good to go.

You need to go into your gradebook (inside myEdison, go into your class, it's on the left side- tell me if you can't find it) and determine your score now (points earned) and points possible.

Here is a super easy way to do this:

assignment a is worth 2% of your grade and is worth 100 points. (87 score)
assignment b is worth 2% of your grade and is worth 100 points. (88 score)
assignment c is worth 5% of your grade and is worth 100 points. (70 score)
assignment d is worth 30% of your grade and is worth 100 points. (90 score)

(you need to do your entire list, I'm keeping it short)

take your points earned on each assignment and multiply it like this:
assignment a: 87 * 2 = 174
assignment b: 88 * 2 = 176
assignment c: 70 * 5 = 350
assignment d: 90 * 30 = 2700

Now, add up your total points earned (174+176+350+2700 = 3400)

Determine the total points possible the same way you calculated your points but you use 100 instead of your score (200+200+500+3000= 3900)

Now, to find your grade, you take the PART (your points) divided by the WHOLE (points possible) which is 3400/3900 = .871 and move the decimal two places to the right= 87.1% is the overall grade (B) for this example.

Once you can do this, you can play around with various homework and exam scores to see how it impacts your grade. A low grade valued at 2% will hardly make a blip, while a low grade with a high % will hit you hard (even if your other grades were good). You can determine exactly your points needed to keep 60% or higher if you do it this way.

What I like to do, is figure out the minimum points I need to pass the entire course. For you, it will be 6000 (D). Then, you will be able to keep a log of how many points you earn and how close you are. Using the example above, the student earned 3400 points but NEEDS 6000 to pass the course- so while they are currently earning a B average, they still need (6000-3400) 2600 points before they pass.

I know sometimes it's hard to explain math on a forum, let me know if you still need help.
